As with iOS7, suppliers aren’t anticipating big glitches with Apple phones running the new iOS8 in terms of compatibility with car radios and other in-car products.
But the final test will come September 17, when the new operating system is released by Apple.
Directed, Alpine, Scosche, iSimple (AAMP of America) and VOXX (Audiovox) say that early testing is showing no signs of major problems with compatibility between phones running iOS8 and their car audio products.
In the 5 or 6 beta releases of iOS8, one supplier said there has been a small issue in video out on the older iPhones with 30 pin connectors. On these, video would show on only 2/3rds of the screen. But he said Apple is aware of the problem and will likely fix it for the final release or shortly after.
Directed’s Jim Jardin said, “We’re doing beta testing with iOS8 and we see no issues for Directed SmartStart consumers and the functionality of their systems.”
Alpine’s Jennifer Quon said,”We are currently in the process of testing our products with a beta version of iOS8 and have not encountered issues.”
Scosche’s Kas Alves said the company’s MagicMount and Power/Connect accessories are fully compatible with the new iPhone 6 models.
iSimple’s Scott Rothstein said, “In all our testing of iOS8, through beta 5, we have not seen any issues..”
Pioneer was more cautious. It released a statement on Facebook stating, “With the expected release of iOS 8 this Autumn…..We cannot guarantee compatibility with iOS 8. Once iOS 8 has been officially released, Pioneer will test and release compatibility or incompatibility information when finalized.”
A statement from Sony’s new Senior Product Manager Brian Pancarik said only, “Sony tests each new iOS release as it comes to market with our 12 volt products to ensure compatibility and make any necessary updates as appropriate.”
iOS8 is expected to offer improvements over the current iOs7 including the ability to embed voice in text messages, which could be useful in the car when its safer to dictate rather than type of message. For moreiOS8 features click here.
